EXPO21: Strategies of Display
a projec t by Simon Moretti
Saturday 13 March - Saturday 8 May 2004
Shahin Afrassiabi, Loris Cecchini, Gareth Jones, Goshka Macuga, Mathieu Mercier, Simon Moretti and Elisa Sighicelli
EXPO21: Strategies of Display brings together seven artists from France, Italy and the UK whose work explores ideas about display and the way objects are presented in museums, galleries, trade fairs and the retail environment.
Much of the work shares an interest in framing, revealing, arranging and 'drawing attention to': from Goshka Macuga's 'exhibitions within exhibitions' - sculptural installations in which she showcases work borrowed from other artists and collectors - to Gareth Jones' subtle and witty adaptations of that much-used piece of gallery furniture: the plinth. The materials of the shop window and DIY store are also re-presented in work which often questions authorship and authenticity in the art market and broader contemporary culture.
Curated by Simon Moretti, EXPO21 includes new commisons by Shahin Afrassiabi, Gareth Jones and Goshka Macuga, and Artist's Talk with Simon Moretti, Goshka Macuga and Alex Farquharson.
EXPO21 it is founded by the Arts Council of England and the Henry Moore Foundation and will tour to the Mead Gallery, Coventry in June
